These days, Nerf is a household name. Popular for both their sports items and their Nerf weaponry, the brand is especially popular with young boys. Nerf is perfectly safe, as all of the products are made out of a lightweight foam material that can be used indoors without damaging anything or anyone. The products have been in production since the 1970s, and have been popular ever since they were first released. Two of the most popular Nerf lines today are Nerf Vortex and Nerf Dart Tag. The latter is one of many Nerf gun games that feature special rules. It can be enjoyed by kids or adults of any age.

Brief History of Nerf Sports and Nerf Gun Games

American Reyn Guyer, a toy inventor, first approached Parker Bros. with the idea for an indoor volleyball game back in 1969. Parker Bros. studied the concept carefully, and they eventually decided to just take the ball and market that as the “world’s first indoor ball”. The Nerf ball was released in 1970, and consumers loved it. Over four million Nerf balls were sold by the end of the year, which led to a larger variety of balls being created and released. The “Nerf” material is made by using chemical reactions with polyester resin and carbon dioxide. The company realized that this material would be perfect for foam darts, and the first Nerf gun was released to raving reviews. Hasbro eventually bought the brand from Parker Bros. and continues to release innovative new Nerf guns and sports products.

What is Nerf Dart Tag?

Nerf Dart Tag is a sub-line of Nerf blasters. It is centered on competition- darts for the game are usually Velcro tipped, and each player wears a Velcro lined vest. Points are scored by shooting a player’s vest in certain areas, and the player (or team) with the most points at the end of the game wins. There are a wide variety of Nerf blasters that can be used for the game. The flagship blaster is called the “Swarmfire”- it is a fully automatic, battery-operated gun capable of shooting 3 darts a second, and it holds 20 darts in the barrel at once. Other guns in the Nerf Dart Tag line are one-shot pistols.

What is Nerf Vortex?

Nerf Vortex is one of the newest sub-lines released by Nerf. It is for the people who complain about the short range of regular Nerf guns, as Nerf Vortex guns are able to shoot up to 65 feet. Instead of darts, Vortex guns use “Xtra Long Range” (or XLR) discs, which are made from plastic surrounded by classic Nerf foam. There are quite a few guns in the Nerf Vortex line- some of them are one-shot pistols, some of them are high-capacity pump action guns, and then there is the “Nitron”, a fully-automatic assault style weapon that shoots 2 discs a second and holds a 20 round magazine. The Nerf Revonix 360, announced in early 2013, will feature an oversized magazine and the ability to shoot discs 21 metres instead of 19.
