Cozy Coupe’s 40th Anniversary – Fun Facts

- Categories : Blog

Little Tike’s Cozy Coupe has been making cars for children for 4 decades now… and counting. The name Cozy Coupe, in fact, is already a legend when it comes to toy automobiles and ride-on vehicles. We can greatly assume that almost any kid out there, and grownup for that matter, has ridden a Cozy Coupe car. You bet, if you ask anyone what’s the first car they have ever driven (from their memory), his or her answer would likely be Cozy Coupe.

Honk! Honk! As our tribute to Cozy Coupe’s 40th anniversary and without further ado, here are some significant facts about this legendary brand of children’s car throughout the years.

The Birth

• The first Cozy Coupe was born in Hudson, Ohio and released in 1979. The original look and assembly were designed by Jim Mariol. It weighed 19 lbs 12 oz and measured 2.6 feet tall.

The Design

• The man who designed the first Cozy Coupe, Jim Mariol, is a former designer at Chrysler, one of the "Big 3" automobile companies in the United States and is famous for manufacturing sedans and minivans.

• During its beginning years, Cozy Coupe was seen to be unusual for a toy car because ride-on toys were moved via pedals. This one was foot-powered, as it is at present. Shout out to the Flintstones!

• Because there were no pedals, Mariol was able to add other features in his design such as functioning doors and a roof – another first during those days.

Unseating Real Cars

• Cozy Coupe became the best-selling car in 1991 with 500,000 units sold, beating real cars Ford Taurus and Honda Accord.

New Designs and a Make Over

• In 1996, Little Tikes released a new line of Cozy Coupe vehicles with an SUV, roadster, pickup truck, and the big and colourful Grand Coupe.

• The Cozy Coupe cars had a slight redesign in 1999 to make it sturdier and more comfortable by making the roof poles thicker.
