Interesting Facts about the Catchy Baby Shark Song

- Categories : Blog

Sometimes, you get to wonder why and how a simple children’s song with a repetitive tune can be so popular it can launch a series of “things” that will haunt and entertain an entire generation – and that includes the grownups. Is it because of its repeating melody (as mentioned) or its basic yet snappy lyrics? Or maybe it’s both!

Pinkfong’s Baby Shark song practically did just that! And even after 4 years since it first became a hit – worldwide – it’s still making waves in social media, children’s parties, dance crazes, et cetera. The song is so popular that the name Baby Shark itself became a line of merchandise delighting kids and parents with its toys, playsets, and educational kits.

The Song’s Origin is Virtually Unknown

While Pinkfong can be credited for popularising the song worldwide through its YouTube channel, the composer and lyricist are unknown. Hearsay evidence says that the song has its origins in summer camps and campfires due to the popularity of the movie "Jaws" in the late 1970s.

The Original Lyrics Had a Darker Tone

Come to think of it, most of the classic nursery rhymes we know from our childhood like London Bridge is Falling Down, Mary Mary Quite Contrary, and Jack and Jill have some kind of dark history attached to them. So it won’t be surprising if you find out that the original Baby Shark song has some disturbing lyrics too. Besides, what would you think when a family of sharks (if they could talk) says, “Let’s go hunt!”?

Thank you, Pinkfong, for making the lyrics kid-friendly!
