How to Play Checkers

Checkers is played by 2 individuals on opposite sides of the checker board. One player has the dark pieces, while the other has the light pieces. Players alternate turns. They move one piece at a time diagonally to an adjacent unoccupied square. Each player can capture their opponent’s piece by jumping over the piece occupying the square.

When one player moves to dare the opponent to capture a piece, the latter is obliged to capture it. The player who captures all the opponent’s pieces wins the game.

Checkers’ Men and Kings

By default, all of the players’ pieces are ranked as “men.” You can upgrade your piece to “king” when your “man” reaches the farthest row of your opponent’s base, which is called the kings’ row.

• Checkers’ Men

Uncrowned pieces are called men. They can only move forward diagonally, and can capture the opponent’s piece by moving to consecutive squares on its way. They can capture an opponent’s piece backward if it’s located adjacent to the square they are on.

• Checkers’ Kings

When a man reaches the kings’ row, it becomes a king and is marked with a crown on its top. Kings can move forward and backward, and at long distances. As long as it is not blocked by one of its men, the king can capture the opponent’s pieces from a far distance.
