They say many of today’s archaeologists and historians wanted to be where they are now because they were inspired by Indiana Jones when they were kids. He may be a fictional character but his legacy has made a mark on the history of pop culture and has influenced generations of children and grownups around the world.
This year, fans of Indiana Jones have a chance to re-awaken their love for the character and his tales as Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Pictures release a new addition to the movie franchise. Professor Henry Walton Jones Jr, more commonly known as Indiana Jones or Indy to his close friends, hits the screens anew to amaze the new generation of moviegoers.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the 5th instalment to the franchise, and it stars the award-winning veteran actor Harrison Ford playing (once again) the role of our favourite daredevil archaeology professor. In Indiana Jones 5, Dr Jones now races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Accompanied by his goddaughter, he soon finds himself squaring off against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who works for NASA. The movie is set to be shown in theatres this June!
We can’t wait to see and hear Indy remind us that all archaeological finds “belong to the museum!” But before we head to the theatres, let's take a look back at the equally awesome films that made Indiana Jones a truly remarkable hero for young ones and long term fans alike.

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Indiana Jones is the classic hero for this adventure film set in the 1930s, as the quick-witted and hardy archaeologist goes on the hunt for the Lost Ark of the Covenant. Often facing insurmountable odds, Indy always manages to succeed in the nick of time, joined by endearing companions and opposed by notorious villains.
The year is 1936 and the intrepid archaeologist Indiana Jones sets out in search of the fabled Lost Ark of the Covenant, racing a bitter rival and his Nazi cohorts to the prize. Over the course of a hair-raising adventure, Indy endures explosions, spiders, snakes, booby traps, and bad guys in his quest to save the holy relic.
2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
A 1930s adventure set in the depths of India, Indy and his friends investigate the strange disappearances of children from a small village. As the mystery leads them within a foreboding temple, Indy is in for a challenge – with alligators, creepy-crawlies, menacing villains, a precarious mine tunnel, and even supernatural powers.
With his companions Willie Scott and Short Round, Indiana Jones is on the run when their group stumbles across a village in the depths of India with an alarming mystery. After the theft of their sacred Sankara stone, the village’s children were kidnapped. Indy decides to set out to rescue them along with the sacred stone, following clues deep within a temple that hides more terrors than simple booby traps.
3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is perhaps best known for its pairing of Harrison Ford as the title character and Sean Connery as Indy’s father, Henry Jones Sr. The hard-nosed professor was a fitting match for the foolhardy archaeologist. With a playful chemistry as endearing as it is entertaining, The Last Crusade is led by these 2 cinema legends.
With speedboats, trains, planes, motorcycles, a zeppelin, and even a tank, Indy embarks on another globetrotting mission, this time to track down the elusive Holy Grail. When Indiana Jones discovers that his father has gone missing, the archaeologist soon finds himself on an adventure to find the legendary Holy Grail. Disagreeable yet loving of each other, Indy and his dad set out together to evade a deadly opponent and his Nazi henchmen and perhaps recover one of history’s greatest secrets.
4. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
With the passage of time came a new era for the fabled archaeologist as the setting moved to America of the late 1950s and an expedition into the jungles of South America. Crystal Skull proved another endearing adventure full of as much grit, whimsy, and spectacle as Indy himself.
Kidnapped by Soviet agents and taken to a secret American military base, Indiana Jones encounters a strange mystery of alien visitors and a crystal skull with mystical powers. With a rebellious young biker named Mutt, Indy heads south into the dense jungles of Peru in order to thwart the Soviets’ dangerous mission and perhaps uncover the secret himself.
5. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
The legendary hero archaeologist is back in this highly anticipated 5th instalment of the iconic franchise: a big, globe-trotting, rip-roaring cinematic adventure.
